Durban music picks: December 9 2011

Hip-hop sensation Lil Wayne, or Weezy to his fans, wraps up his South African tour at the Wavehouse this weekend.

Lil Wayne, one of the big stars of record company Cash Money, is on a worldwide tour in support of his Tha Carter IV album, the fastest-selling release in American history, which shifted 946?000 units in a single week, and precedes the upcoming release of I Am Still Music II. One hopes Weezy is enjoying the South African sunshine, which ought to make a nice change from Rikers Island prison where the rapper spent eight months last year.

The Wavehouse, Gateway, on Sunday December 11 at 8pm. Tickets from R400 to R750 at Computicket.

? Tanga Pasi is a new musical phenomenon from Zimbabwe and makes a whistle-stop tour of Durban this weekend. The name means “starting from scratch” and, given the iconoclastic nature of their music, Tanga Pasi hit the nail on the head. They describe their sound as “Nu-Afro” — a brew of reggae, Afro-jazz, folk, rock, Kalanga rhythms and traditional Ndebele harmonies. It blends contemporary sensibilities with a traditional feel.

Lead vocals and on rhythm guitar is Sinini Ngwenya. Pamela Ngwenya provides backing vocals and is on keyboards, harmonica, melodica and percussion, Mthakazelwa Nyathi provides backing vocals and is on lead guitar, Caleb Dube is on drums and Blessing Shamu provides backing vocals and is on bass. For their Durban performance they are joined by Maqhinga Radebe of Shabalala Rhythm on
guitar..

Bluestockings, Kloof, on Saturday December 10 at 7.30pm. Tickets are R60, booking is essential. Tel: 083 659 3628.
