? Catch raggae group 340ml this weekend in a club-based concert with the theme Dub Saved My Life. The band, which melds dub, reggae, ska and rock and other other sounds, is made up of Pedro da Silva Pinto on vocals, Rui Soeiro on bass, Paulo Chibanga on drums and Tiago Paulo on guitar. Mythically, the origins of 340ml lie in Mozambique, but with a firm local following they have put out two albums — Moving and Sorry for the Delay. Some of the group’s band members regularly back rapper Tumi of Tumi and the Volume.

? An intriguing event this New Year will be the Smoking Dragon New Year’s Festival, in the foothills of the Drakensberg. Hosted at the Amphitheatre Backpackers near Bergville, the event will feature South African music legends alongside emergent talent. The biggest drawcard is Zulu maskandi guitarist Madala Kunene, who will wow the audience with his hypnotic, psychedelic guitar work. Johannesburg’s latest and hottest young outfit The Brother Moves On will also take to the stage as will Durban’s Coals of Juniper. Add to that sets from Cortina Whiplash, Kathy Raven, John Ellis, Gangs of Ballet and Josie Field and many other bands and DJs and it all adds up to a great way to see in 2012.

Other performers include jazz icon Jonas Gwangwa, Zimbabwean folk hero Oliver Mtukudzi with his band the Black Spirits, Sama award-winning guitarist and songwriter Selaelo Selota and trendsetter Zakes Bantwini. There will be between-time DJs and a kiddies’ village.
