Cape music picks: January 27 2012

Local vocalist Inge Beckmann is a master of pop-cultural seduction, provocation and innovation.

Since grabbing the public’s ear as the self-confessed “mother-bitch soprano” behind Lark, she has lent her talent to a wild diversity of projects. Now Beckmann is back with what could be her most interesting and accessible project to date. Going under the moniker komBass, she appears with Rian Zietsman and Louis Nel of Taxi Violence fame and Sasha Righini from indie upstarts the Plastics.

Mercury Live & Lounge, 43 De Villiers Street, Zonnebloem. January 28 at 10pm. Entrance is R30 before 10pm and R40 thereafter.

? The power of the musician Winston “Mankunku” Ngozi’s bellowing saxophone continues to inspire new generations of artists. Ngozi, who died three years ago, forged a distinctly South African vernacular that merged local jazz traditions with the idiomatic innovations of African-American jazz giants such as John Coltrane. It is this legacy that this year’s KWV Sax Summit celebrates by bringing together the diverse sax sounds of African jazz pioneers Barney Rachabane and Khaya Mahlangu with award-winning young gun Mark Fransman.

West End, College Road, Rylands. January 29 at 5pm. Music starts at 6.30pm. Entrance is R60.
