IEC unveils new chief electoral officer

Mosotho Simon Moepya has been appointed as the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) new chief electoral officer, it said on Tuesday.

IEC chairperson Pansy Tlakula made the announcement in Centurion, Pretoria, at the conclusion of the selection process, the IEC said in a statement.

The position became vacant when Tlakula — the previous chief electoral officer — was appointed IEC chairperson in November.

Moepya joined the IEC in 1998 as manager of electoral logistics.

In 1999, he was promoted to senior manager and in 2001 to the position of deputy chief electoral officer.

He previously led the IEC team that provided technical assistance to the national election commission of Tanzania and the team that helped the Democratic Republic of Congo during its first democratic elections in 2006. — Sapa
