Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota leaves the National Assembly in Cape Town
Congress of the People (Cope) leader Mosiuoa Lekota plans to sue Parliament after he was expelled for comments made about President Jacob Zuma and The Spear painting, it was reported on Sunday.
The Weekend Argus reported that Lekota would file papers on Monday, seeking a review and reversal of the decision, and an apology for himself and Cope.
Lekota criticised Zuma during the Presidency Budget Vote debate for not defending the constitutional rights of artist Brett Murray or City Press editor Ferial Haffajee.
The legal action would be directed towards Parliament and Deputy Speaker Nomaindia Mfeketo.
"It is a very dangerous precedent, if its not challenged and reversed. No member of the opposition may criticise the president… it has very serious implications for democracy," Lekota told the newspaper.
Parliament confirmed it had received notice that papers would be served, but said it would not comment until the papers were actually received. – Sapa.
