M&g Newsroom Podcast: Does Banning Alcohol Decrease Violence?
Catch the M&G Newsroom podcast, talking about genetically modified food and alcohol's effect on violence.

The Mail & Guardian's weekly show on 20vfm streamed live on Monday. Hosting the show was Verashni Pillay, who was joined by M&G day editor Deshnee Subramany. We took an indepth look into issues this week with key experts.

irst up, we look a look at how a night-time ban on shebeens in a far-flung Eastern Cape village has wiped out violence in the area. Award-winning health reporter Mia Malan joined us in studio to talk us through her time in the village and the implications of the ban.

Later on in the show we spoke to science author and reporter Sarah Wild, who has done an investigation into the raging debate around genetically modified foods. Are GMO (genetically modified organisms) crops all that bad, or have the recent protests been overstated?

Your hosts will caught you up on the main news of the week. We learned why President Jacob Zuma's cohorts are not happy about Glynnis Breytenbach's return to work at the National Prosecuting Authority and the latest in the Sunday Times's coverage of Communications Minister Dina Pule. We also unpacked the ongoing debate in the City Press of anti-indian sentiments and Indian-on-black racism.

Then there was the weekly choon where we took a potshot at a deserving public figure and, of course, more music and analysis of the news week ahead, including Oscar Pistorius's return to court. Listen to it all below.
