Gauteng Minister For Economic Development Dies In Car Accident

The ANC "in Gauteng have confirmed that Gauteng MEC for Economic Development Nkosiphendule Kolisile has died in a car accident", reported Eyewitness News (EWN) on Saturday.

According to the report, it is alleged that the driver and bodyguard were also killed in the accident.

"It has been confirmed that the accident occurred in the Free State en route to the Eastern Cape," said EWN.

"It's understood Kolisile was on his way to attend a funeral." 

ANC Gauteng chairperson Paul Mashatile told the SABC that Kolisile was travelling to a funeral in Queenstown, Eastern Cape when they collided head-on with another vehicle.

Mashatile said Premier Nomvula Mokonyane was with Kolisile's family.

News of Kolisile's death sparked reaction from political parties.

The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng described Kolisile as a great addition to the provincial Cabinet following a reshuffle.

"[He] had a sterling record in the Gauteng provincial legislature," DA provincial spokesperson Marius Redelinghuys said in a statement.

The Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) said they were shocked at his the passing.

"As the YCLSA we send our deepest condolences to his family, colleagues and friends," said spokesperson Khaya Xaba. – Additional reporting by Sapa
