Africa’s musical greats gather for Channel O awards

Some of Africa's greatest musical talent gathered at Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto, on Saturday for one of the continent's renowned music awards ceremonies, the Channel O Africa Music Video awards.

Artists received awards based on public votes, except the special recognition award that was handed over to Nigerian R&B duo P-Square.

The twins, Peter and Paul Okoye, wowed the crowd inside the dome as they performed some of their most popular hits such as Alingo, Chop My Money and Personally.

The evening included performances by Cassper Nyovest featuring Okmalumkooklat, Burna Boy, The Soil, Buffalo Souljah, Wizkid, AKA featuring Da L.E.S. and Khuli Chana who made a dramatic entrance on a hospital bed before performing his latest single, Mnatebawen.

Rappers Naeto C, from Nigeria, and AKA hosted the awards show. The rapper also received the hip-hop video of the year award for his hit track, Jealousy.

Botswana rapper Zeus was named the winner of the male video of the year for #DatsWasup, which features hip-hop stars AKA and Tumi.

These are unprecedented times, and the role of media to tell and record the story of South Africa as it develops is more important than ever. But it comes at a cost. Advertisers are cancelling campaigns, and our live events have come to an abrupt halt. Our income has been slashed.
