The IPM is a Saqa-recognised (South African Qualifications Authority) professional body for Human Resources management, founded in 1945.
Since its inception, IPM has been enhancing the competence of HR professionals. We dedicate our efforts to providing knowledge and tools for strategic people development and leadership, which contribute to the growth, profitability and sustainability of businesses.
Our vision is to be the portal to thought leadership in people management.
Our mission is to provide members with easy access to the latest information, knowledge, expertise, training and development systems, including process and networks in people management.
Values: Member-centric, integrity, advocacy. IPM is sincerely committed to advancing transformation in our workplace and to striving for equity at all levels. We welcome HR professionals, academics and leaders from all sectors of our economy who share this commitment to embedding a culture of diversity and sustainable performance.
A strong heritage: The IPM is the oldest human resource professional body in Africa. We’ve been a home for HR professionals in South Africa and neighbouring countries for over 65 years.
We’re the founding member of the African Human Resource Confederation (AHRC). Through our membership of the AHRC, we are affiliated to the World Federation of People Management Associations (WFPMA), the United Nations of HR.
We are also a sister organisation to HR professional bodies across the globe, such as the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) in the United States, the Chartered Institute of People Development (CIPD) in the United Kingdom, the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) in Australia, and more. We consistently leverage global networks for the benefit of members.
In 2012, IPM achieved its professional recognition status, a significant milestone and one of which we are extremely proud. IPM is required to fulfil the following role:
• Represent and regulate a recognised community of expert practitioners and HR professionals.
• Promote protection of the public by professional bodies from malpractice related to the fulfilment of the professional duties and responsibilities of professionals registered with it.
• Promote pride in association for all professions, including traditional trades and occupations.
• Develop professional designations to award to its members and the capacity to monitor and revoke them.
• Develop and implement a code of conduct.
• Demonstrate capacity to institute a system of reporting and investigating alleged contraventions of its code of conduct
• Demonstrate that it does not apply unfair exclusionary practices in the awarding of its professional designations to advance the objectives of the NQF.
• Promote public understanding of and trust in the profession.
• Encourage international leading practice and the raising of professional esteem.
• Facilitate access to, and analysis of data related to professions for purposes of the NQF Act.
• Support the development of a national career advice system.
• Encourage the development and implementation of professional development.
• Play a key role in identifying suitable workplaces for work integrated learning and be involved in the assessment of workplace experience.
• Play a key role in the identification of suitable education and training providers and be involved in the curriculation of learning programmes offered by education and training providers, including tertiary institutions.
• Advance the profession and the competencies of its members by setting and administering its own board examination.
A future focus
Strategically, we are positioned to serve and lead HR professionals and people managers into the future, as the professional body of choice. The IPM chief executive Elijah Litheko serves on the Human Resource Development Council (HRDC), which is chaired by the Deputy President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.
We offer a range of services to meet the current needs of our members through our IPM Professional Development Academy and we keep our finger on the pulse in terms of latest trends.
The IPM has worked with and continues to work with thought leaders to bring its members the latest dialogue and research on people management, business sustainability and global competitiveness, so that we can drive value into the future.
As of September 1 2014, the IPM official magazine, People Dynamics, will be published by HR Pulse. The newly refreshed official publication offers a dynamic mix of topical content for readers.
“Through our partnership with HR Pulse, we aim to equip you with the knowledge and information you need to keep your finger on the pulse within the human capital and business leadership space.” — Elijah Litheko, IPM chief executive
IPM has been partnering with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in conducting the worldwide survey entitled “Creating People Advantage” since 2008. We also partnered with the University of Michigan and the RBL Group to conduct the Global HR competency study led by Professor Dave Ulrich and partners. IPM chief executive Elijah Litheko co-authored a chapter on Africa in the book Global HR Competencies, published in 2012.
