14th Metro FM Music Awards nominees announced

The 14th Metro FM Music awards return to Durban, one of the seven Wonder Cities of the World, for the third consecutive year.

Themed “celebrating greatness”, the nominees were announced on Thursday night at The Forum in Bryanston, Johannesburg. The award ceremony will be held on February 28 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) and will be broadcast live on SABC 1 at 8pm.

The nominees reflect what a big year 2014 was for South African hip-hop with the genre’s artists dominating categories such as Best Collaboration, Best Male Album and Best Music Video.

One of the most sought-after accolades, the Song of the Year category, which was dominated by dance music in 2014, features hip hop acts such as AKA (Congratulate), Cassper Nyovest (Doc Shebeleza and Phumakim) and DJ Dimplez (Yaya).

With only three nominees, the Best Kwaito album category has the least nominations. The nominees include: Thebe (The Legend), Trompies (Delicious) and L’vovo Derango (The Boss). Rapper Cassper Nyovest bagged seven nominations – the most for a single artist this year – for his debut album, Tsholofelo.

All Eyes On Me hitmaker, AKA, scooped six nominations: Best Collaboration (twice), Best Music Video, Best Hip-Hop Album, Best Male Album and Song of the Year.

Pop group, Beatenberg, received five nominations: Best Group, Best Collaboration, Best African Pop Album, Best Hit Single and Song of the Year for their hit single Rafael

The radio station has added a new award category this year, called the Listeners’ Choice Nominee. The public can vote for their favourite artist from any of the categories by logging onto the Metro FM website.

The voting lines will be to the public until February 22 2015 at midnight for all categories except song of the year. Song of the year will close on February 28 at 9.30pm. For more info on the voting rules visit metrofm.co.za
