‘Daughter of Soweto uprising’ wows audience

Poetry in motion: Khanyisiler Kolane
Poetry in motion: Khanyisiler Kolane

Oliver Reginald Tambo you led us out
Of the bushes of Angola and Tanzania
Father of our freedom, we stand tall: black, white, Indians and coloureds,
United with our different colours
Our AK- 47, guerilla mortars thrown away into the Pacific Ocean
Children of the Rainbow Nation no longer segregated
Playing chess, morababa together
Diketo and cricket together
Unity in diversity, Oliver Reginald Tambo
Let our peace be joy to you, our unity shake your grave
Usi bulisele ku Tata Mandela
Tell him that never and never
Again be separated
Unity in diversity
DEMOCRACY, FREEDOM, LIBERTY
CRIME, ALCHOHOL, DRUGS NO FUTURE
South Africa my beloved country
Born in a country with scars
A country rich with wisdom and knowledge
A country rich with minerals and agriculture
I count my blessings
As I view Mount Kilimanjaro
And the Drakensberg
The Zambezi and the Lekwa
I sail from Durban to Port Elizabeth
Without a passport
I fly from Mpumulanga, Secunda to Gauteng, Ekhuruleni
Without a permit
DEMOCRACY FREEDOM LIBERTY
CRIME ALCOHOL DRUGS NO FUTURE
I am the descendent of Hector Pieterson
I embrace no violence for I know my rights
I am the fruit of the tree that was watered
By the blood of Solomon Mahlangu
I am the daughter of the 1976 Soweto youth uprising
I am the grandchild of the 1960 Sharpville massacre
I value my independence
DEMOCRACY FREEDOM LIBERTY
CRIME ALCOHOL DRUGS NO FUTURE
I am no gangster
I am a teacher, doctor, pilot
I am a drug-free child
My free education was paid for by
27 years of imprisonment
And 30 years of exile
South Africa my beloved country
