Infrastructure Improved

While there is consensus that the Free State has a modern and robust infrastructure, the MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure Dora Kotzee is ensuring that it continues to improve.

“In collaboration with client departments, we have successfully completed over 242 capital projects since 2009 including schools, hospitals, libraries, community halls, multi-purpose centres and government offices.

“We pride ourselves in having successfully delivered projects such as Seisa Ramabodu Stadium, Albert Nzula and Senorita Nhlabathi Hospitals, Bainsvlei Combined School Hostel and the housing project in Ficksburg using massification.

“In the department alone, we have spent over R1.7-billion to ensure we stay true to our mandate of promoting economic growth through the development of socioeconomic infrastructure.

“We have also created over 295 000 work opportunities, reaching communities across the entire Free State, while upskilling these people through training on such technical skills as kerb laying and concrete batching, while also teaching them sound health and safety principles.”

Kotzee said that in terms of its expanded works programme, over the past five years the department has implemented its flagship TRP project in 16 townships and paved over 70km of township roads in such areas as Jagersfontein, Virginia, Henneman, Allanridge, Petrusburg and Alington.

“This year alone, we expanded the project to seven more townships, including Tshiame, Hertzogville, Excelsior, Winburg and Tweespruit.

“We are champions of the radical economic transformation programme and we will continue to implement programmes that create sustainable economic growth in townships, including the transformation of the [stubborn] property industry, to ensure that the Free State story sustains its presence and captures the imagination of our people by changing their lives for the better,” she concluded.
