The Mail & Guardian is advertising for an entertainment editor, operating across all platforms.
Main responsibilities
- Oversee arts staff and Friday diary across platform, and ensure the team produces compelling content including news, in-depth features and profiles.
- Establish and oversee a strong multimedia presence for the department and help extend this to the rest of the newsroom
- Oversee the online presence of Friday as a brand, including expanding on the use of social media
- Ensure Friday’s content distinguishes the Mail & Guardian from its competitors
- Attend appropriate events on behalf of the Mail & Guardian
- Represent the M&G on public platforms such as radio and television interviews and public debates.
- Maintain a wide range of contacts in the entertainment industry
- Write an entertainment column weekly
Required skills
- Experience in digital journalism
- Excellent knowledge of media law and ethics
- First-class English language skills Editorial experience at a national title
- A thorough understanding of the Mail & Guardian news brand
Highly advantageous experience & skills:
- Strong organisational skills Experience in multimedia or broadcasting A firm grasp of current affairs, especially locally
Characteristics and competencies:
- Strong interpersonal skills Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) Exceptional planning and implementation skills Ability to work accurately under pressure Able to meet deadlines Strong analytical ability
Required Qualifications: A degree in Journalism or similar qualification
Remuneration: Negotiable depending on experience
