PRETORIA, May 29 (ANA) – A man quickly changed from his African National Congress T-shirt bearing the image of President Jacob Zuma into a blue and white Democratic Alliance T-shirt as former DA leader Helen Zille appealed for votes in Pretoria on Sunday.
“You cannot say we are moving forward when someone is eating alone. He has bought cars for his five wives and here we are struggling,” said Themba Masilela in reference to Zuma.
“You can see how the houses are here. Then what should I do? I cannot vote for a person who hasn’t done anything for me. That’s all,” he said.
Zille joined DA Tshwane mayoral candidate Solly Msimanga in campaigning around Pretoria this weekend in preparation for the August 3 local government elections.
On Tuesday, Police Minister Nathi Nhleko revealed that more than R8.6 million of the SA Police Service budget was used to buy luxury sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for Zuma’s four wives over the past four financial years.
The vehicles purchased included four Range Rover SUVs in 2013 at a cost of R946,612 each and two Land Rover Discovery SUVs in 2014 for R638,831 each.
According to Nhleko’s written reply to a parliamentary question, five vehicles were purchased this year – two Audi Q7 SUVs at a cost of R857,047 each and three Audi A6 sedans with a price tag of R634,992 each.
