Broadcasting regulatory body Icasa rules that SABC must withdraw the decision not to air violent protests

SABC will pay an administrative penalty of over R31.8-million and provide 25% bonus advertising space for every rand of advertising space.
Once the final submissions are made by August 31, the public’s input will be consolidated internally and a final draft will go through approval by the board and finally sent to Icasa. (Delwyn Verasamy/M&G)

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has ruled that the SABC must withdraw its decision to not air footage of violent protests, reports have said.

Acting chairperson of Icasa Rubben Mohlaloga reportedly made the announcement at a media briefing in Johannesburg on Monday, after a number of civil bodies laid a complaint over the public broadcaster’s decision to ban footage of violence.

Mohlaloga added that the decision was binding.

We will be updating this story as it develops.
