Miss Milli Recommends: The Bertram’s inner city farm is all goodness and no pretence

The Bambanani organic vegetable farm at Bertrams has given me life since discovering the affordable, earthy vegetables there, not far from my neighbourhood — and with not a tinge of pretension.

On my first visit, a woman named Refiloe Molefe, said: “Welcome home, my child.’’

For the past 10 years she has been selling her organic fruit and vegetables grown on site.

This warm welcome was made even warmer by a unique shopping experience in which I picked some of my own vegetables with her encouragement and help.

In the end, I walked away with four bags of spinach, kale, carrots, baby potatoes, brinjals, red cabbages, spring onion, mint, avocado, coriander and oranges — all for just R150.

Mam’ Refiloe is open every day, including Sundays. She makes smoothies, juices and pickled veggies on site and teaches patrons, especially children, the useful art of farming.
