Find out more about the lives of refugees through art at this MSF fundraising event

Find Out

During the last two years the Syrian war and the European refugee crisis have focused the world’s attention to the perilous routes people on the move are forced to use to flee. On the Move is the title of a Doctors Without Borders (MSF) fundraising event aimed at getting donations from the public, and also bringing awareness of the organisation and its work to a larger South African audience.

A core part of the fundraising event will be entertainment from iconic jazz legend Hugh Masekela – himself a man who knows what it is like to be On the Move. In 1960, aged 21, the young Hugh left South Africa to begin what would be a 30-year exile in America.

In a carefully orchestrated evening, guests at the On the Move fundraiser at Johannesburg’s Turbine Hall will be taken on a journey and given the chance to get a taste and understanding of the situation of people fleeing their homes, using also Virtual Reality technology There will be stalls representing different countries and cultures, as well a refugee/migration route people would take.

Hugh Masekela’s hit song Stimela tells the journey of thousands of migrants on a steam train to Johannesburg’s gold and platinum mines. Stimela is also the title of Luca Sola’s photographic and multimedia project, portraying the current migration phenomenon, which will be exhibited On The Move.

The event concept will be supported by artworks (to be auctioned off as part of the fundraising effort) as well as the national dishes from the countries of the displaced people. African style will be showcased through Kisua (a unique African fashion brand that honours the continent’s brightest design talent) in a fashion show.

The guests also will have the opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from the MSF fieldworkers who put their own lives at risk to ensure that those fleeing persecution, war and economic hardship have a chance of survival. The stories from the ground are both alarming and heart-warming. People are killed, people are hurt, people are helped. Many survive because of medical or other interventions by dedicated MSF fieldworker teams.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) brings medical care and hope to millions of refugees, and migrants, simply because they are human beings who deserve to receive life-saving assistance.

Such a commitment is impossible without the support of individuals. On September 2, you will have a chance to be immersed into a world of change and movement. You will also have the opportunity to promote change by donating to MSF.
