Join the debate on energy at the Mail & Guardian Critical Thinking Forum sessions at the Africa Energy Indaba on February 21 and 2017

Date: Wednesday, 21nd February

Time: 11h00 – 12h30

Topic: Renewable/Alternative energy

The debate will explore in detail what the business case for alternative energy currently is.

Is it still viable? Are the correct infrastructure and development investments being made?

We will attempt to answer how alternative and renewable energy investment can help tackle poverty and unemployment.

Panellists: Dr Thembakazi Mali, (general manager: clean energy, Sanedi) and Dr Minnesh Bipath, (general manager: smart grids, Sanedi), Dave Smith (industry stalwart, ex Eskom)

Moderator: Mr Kadri Nassiep (chief executive, Sanedi)

Date: Wednesday, 22nd February:

Time: 11h00 – 12h30

Topic: Nuclear Energy

THE topic in South African energy at the minute is whether or not you can run a whole grid on a mix of energy (wind, gas, diesel, solar). The new Eskom hierarchy vehemently oppose this and say nuclear is critical. Much of the private sector and groups like CSIR say a decentralized mix is the future. This panel will debate this

Panellists: Knox Msebenzi – Nuclear Industry Association of South Africa, Dr Tobias Bischof-Niemz – CSIR, Francis Carruthers (chief executive, Lesedi Nuclear services)

Moderator: Khadija Patel – Mail & Guardian editor-in- Chief
