The Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism at the Mail & Guardian is looking for freelance radio sound technicians to edit high quality, sound-rich, public broadcast-style podcasts of between 4 and 7 minutes. This will also include recording voice overs. (Please note this job opportunity is specifically for those with public radio sound editing experience, as opposed to music recording experience).
Bhekisisa focuses on solutions-based narrative journalism. We’re working with producers who can pair strong narratives with science in podcasts that use natural sound to bring these stories to life.
This sound technician position is not a producer position — it is specifically for mixing and editing sound and is Johannesburg-based, as you would need to work with Johannesburg-based voice artists who will be voicing our podcasts.

Job description:
- Edit provided sound according to approved scripts for podcasts to be disseminated online and on the radio.
- Record professional voice overs according to provided scripts for use in radio packages.
- Work with Bhekisisa’s editor to accommodate any edits/corrections.
Requirements:
- At least 10 years experience in sound editing public radio or National Public Radio-type packages or podcasts.
- Applicants must provide their own broadcast-quality recording equipment and editing software, preferably Adobe Audition.
- Candidates must be based in Johannesburg and have legal permission to work in the country.
Please note that this is a freelance position. The successful applicant will be provided with edited sound bytes and natural sound as a script for editing purposes. The script will be voiced by a Bhekisisa voice artist and the sound bytes voicers, and natural sound will then have to be edited together according to the instructions in the script. The rate per edited package will be R1 000 per package.
