ANC facing mayoral revolt

The African National Congress is facing an unprecedented revolt over some of its mayoral choices, with councillors opting to vote for their preferred candidates and overlooking provincial nominees. In the Eastern Cape alone, councillors have voted for seven "self-chosen" mayors and speakers.

He could still be president, diehard supporters believe

Jacob Zuma’s core supporters still believe that, with his accuser’s credi­bility in doubt, he will go on to clear himself of rape charges and re-establish his chances of becoming the next African National Congress president. And they stress that Zuma’s deepening woes do not necessarily strengthen President Thabo Mbeki’s position, because grassroots ANC members hold Mbeki responsible for engineering them.

It’s the ANC or no vote at all

The African National Congress appeared to have substantially increased its majority in the local government poll, while the Democratic Alliance, hit by voting for other opposition parties, had not done as well as as it hoped. These appear to be the major trends of Wednesday’s voting for South Africa’s 284 municipalities.

The African National Congress has retained all serving metro mayors on its local election candidate lists — despite earlier speculation that there could be wholesale changes. Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo, Cape Town mayor Noma-india Mfeketo, Ekurhuleni mayor Duma Nkosi and Durban mayor Obed Mlaba top their respective local lists.
