A major computer failure at OR Tambo International airport on Thursday morning led to several delays. Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) spokesperson Solomon Makgale told the Mail & Guardian Online that some flights ”on one or two airlines” had been delayed.

Zimbabwe’s Media and Information Commission this week issued publishing licences for the Zimbabwe Independent and the Standard, published by Mail & Guardian chief executive Trevor Ncube, despite recent fears that a much-criticised crackdown on media freedom would also affect these newspapers.

The United Democratic Party (UDM) will not be participating in this year’s State of the Nation debate unless it is allocated reasonable time to raise its supporters’ issues, the party’s leader, Bantu Holomisa, said on Monday. According to the UDM leader, Parliament on Monday informed him that his party has been given only one minute to participate in the debate scheduled to take place on Friday.

The National Civil Safety and Security Action (Nacissa) has asked how government and the ruling party can promote a better life for all if crime is out of control. "We are not against strategies that the government has put in place; we are here to assist," Nacissa chief executive Ockie van der Schyf said in Pretoria on Friday.

The resignation of veteran journalist John Perlman was accepted ”with regret” by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) on Tuesday. Perlman was recognised as one of South Africa’s top current-affairs radio anchors, SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said in a statement.

South African low-cost airline 1time is not backing down to increasing competition in its sector and is adding new routes and more flights to its current flight schedule. From March 25, 1time will fly daily between Cape Town and Durban and on Fridays and Sundays between Johannesburg and George.

African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma on Saturday denied meeting businessman Tokyo Sexwale to discuss the latter’s bid for leading the ruling party, as reported by the <i>Mail & Guardian</i>. Zuma said caution should be applied to "the use of faceless sources that have questionable motives".

British Airways (BA) has cancelled flights to South Africa pending a strike by cabin crew, it said on Friday. British Airways South Africa general manager Lin Glass said no flights from London to South Africa would be available on January 30 and 31. Flights from South Africa to London on February 2 and 3 would also be affected.

South African commuters will be among the thousands of travellers set to be inconvenienced as British Airways on Thursday announced the cancellation of all its flights for two days next week from London’s Heathrow airport, and many from Gatwick, due to a planned strike by cabin crew.
