Eleven people have been arrested in connection with violence that erupted in Diepsloot when residents were protesting their removal to Brits near Pretoria, police said on Monday. Earlier on Monday residents of the area burnt two city council buildings in protest at their removal to Brits "without any reason".
The Presidency has confirmed that the five-year contract of the Deputy Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Gill Marcus, expires on Wednesday. President Thabo Mbeki has consulted with Marcus about the renewal of her contract and she has indicated she would like to discuss other matters with the president regarding her future.

Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi has refused to become India’s next prime minister, it was reported on Tuesday. She has apparently told senior Congress Party leaders that she does not want to head the new government, television network NDTV reported.
