Rubber bullets fly in Diepsloot

Eleven people have been arrested in connection with violence that erupted in Diepsloot when residents were protesting their removal to Brits near Pretoria, police said on Monday. Earlier on Monday residents of the area burnt two city council buildings in protest at their removal to Brits "without any reason".

End of the road for Marcus?

The Presidency has confirmed that the five-year contract of the Deputy Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Gill Marcus, expires on Wednesday. President Thabo Mbeki has consulted with Marcus about the renewal of her contract and she has indicated she would like to discuss other matters with the president regarding her future.

Laduma! SA gets World Cup

South Africa has been chosen by Fifa as the host country for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The announcement was made by Fifa president Sepp Blatter in Zurich on Saturday. ”Fifa has made the right decision. It’s time to go out an celebrate,” said President Thabo Mbeki in Pretoria as the bells of the Union Buildings rang out in celebration.

<i>The Face</i>, the ultra-cool pop culture magazine that helped shape many trends of the 1980s and 1990s, is being closed because of poor sales, its publishers said on Friday. The British monthly launched in 1980 and stood out with its edgy take on music and fashion.

LPM: ‘We will not be intimidated’

Sixty members of the Landless People’s Movement (LPM) arrested on election day in Thembelihle informal settlement near Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, were granted R300 bail in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. They spent the previous night in the holding cells. They were charged with contravening electoral laws.

Nine parties set for Parliament

The African National Congress was on Thursday afternoon heading towards a pivotal 70%, followed by the incumbent official opposition Democratic Alliance at about 15%.

Western Cape voters out in force

<img src="http://www.mg.co.za/ContentImages/41909/10-X-Logo.gif" align=left>Slightly more than 45% of registered voters in the Western Cape had cast their vote by 2.30pm on Wednesday. An Independent Electoral Commission officer said there had been numerous complaints from political parties contesting the elections, and long queues had formed in areas such as Guguletu and Langa.
