United States President George Bush on Thursday ordered gradual troop reductions in Iraq but defied calls for a dramatic change of course, telling war-weary Americans the US military role there will stretch beyond his presidency. Bush acknowledged Americans’ frustration with the war but insisted progress was being made.
United States President George Bush sought to calm Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Tuesday over plans for a US missile defence shield in Eastern Europe, saying on the eve of a big-power summit that Russia had nothing to fear. The Kremlin leader reacted furiously to a US plan to site a radar system in the Czech Republic and missile interceptors in Poland.
President George Bush has chosen Robert Zoellick, a former United States trade representative, to replace Paul Wolfowitz as president of the World Bank, a senior official said on Tuesday. Bush plans to announce his selection on Wednesday and expects the bank’s board to accept it, the administration official said.
The United States and Iran will meet in Baghdad in the next few weeks to discuss Tehran taking a ”productive role” in Iraq’s security, the White House said on Sunday. US Ambassador to Iraq Chester Crocker will represent the United States, which has accused Iran of backing Shi’ite militia in Iraq and seeking an atomic bomb.

United States President George Bush urged a rebellious Congress on Tuesday to give his new Iraq war plan a chance and insisted in his State of the Union speech it is not too late to shape the outcome. Facing sceptical lawmakers and some of the weakest approval ratings of his six years in office, Bush said the best chance for success is to send 21 500 more US troops to Iraq.

United States President George Bush praised Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki as a ”strong leader” on Thursday and said he agreed with him that any partition of Iraq would only increase violence. Bush’s show of support for Maliki came after US officials insisted the Iraqi leader had not snubbed Bush on Wednesday when the two had been expected to meet.

Vice-President Dick Cheney said on Tuesday he thought Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton could win the White House in 2008 and that a potential Democratic opponent, Senator Barack Obama, was too inexperienced. Clinton, a New York Democrat who is running for re-election, is considered a likely contender for the White House in 2008.
