Household insurance and security

Insurers often require that you have certain security measures in place to protect your home and its contents.

  • When you insure the contents of your home, tell your insurer exactly which security devices are in use at all times. If you have stipulated that you have a burglar alarm and an electric fence, be sure they are in use at all times. If you slip up, it may be a very costly mistake. (You may be surprised to know that millions of people make this most basic of mistakes.)

  • Be sure to maintain your security. Are you burglar bars secure, not rusting or broken? Is your alarm malfunctioning? When last did you have your panic buttons and alarms tested?

  • If you have upgraded your security since taking out your household insurance policy, let your insurer know. Improved security means a lower risk and a lower premium.
