Hip-hop artist and presenter, Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye was arrested in Johannesburg on Thursday on charges of rape, attempted murder and assault

after police concluded an investigation into sexual assault allegations made by actress Amanda du-Pont last year.

Maarohanye handed himself in to the police on Thursday after being issued with an arrest warrant, Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo told the Mail & Guardian.

The warrant emanates from a case opened by Du-Pont in February last year. The matter was referred to the police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for investigation, Masondo said.

Maarohanye made a same-day court appearance on Thursday and was released on R10 000 bail.

It is not the first time the artist has faced murder-related charges.

Maarohanye was released on parole in 2017 after spending just over four years in prison. He and Themba Shabalala were found guilty of murder, attempted murder, driving under the influence of drugs and racing on a public road in 2012.

The pair crashed their Mini Coopers into a group of schoolboys in Protea North, Soweto, in 2010, killing Prince Mohube, Mlungisi Cwayi, Andile Mthombeni and Phomello Masemola. Two survivors, Frank Mlambo and Fumani Mushwana, were left permanently brain damaged.

The Johannesburg high court overturned the murder convictions in 2014, leading to a  reduction in their sentences.
