Zambia was hit by a new nationwide power failure late on Monday, the second in 48 hours. The entire country was plunged into darkness at about 5.30pm GMT and partial supplies were only restored on Tuesday to critical areas, such as hospitals and military installations, said Rhodnie Sisala, managing director of the state-run Zambia Electricity Supply Company.

The JSE was down only 0,83% at noon on Tuesday, as buying interest among banks helped it recover from sharp losses of over 4% in the morning session. By noon, the platinum mining index fell 2,27%, resources were down 1,72%, and the gold mining index pulled back 1,47%.

About 500 people were trapped at the top of Table Mountain on Monday night for three-and-a-half hours after an Eskom power cut, the Times reported on Tuesday. Some of those stranded were in two cable cars suspended in mid-air. A spokesperson for the cableway said that the power cut jerked key equipment on the two cars out of alignment.

Zimbabwe’s central bank chief has accused local banks of creating ”artificial” cash shortages by failing to collect money from the country’s main bank for distribution to clients. Some banking institutions ”have been noted to be engaging in imprudent and unethical practices”, Gideon Gono, central bank governor, told journalists and bankers on Monday.

Saffron-robed Buddhist monks, Nepali Sherpas and grey-bearded mountaineers paid homage on Tuesday to Sir Edmund Hillary, the man who conquered Everest, as thousands gathered in New Zealand to watch his state funeral. ”His loss to us is bigger and heavier than Mount Everest,” Ang Rita Sherpa told the service in a small church in Auckland.
