Zuma, Mbeki camps rally in Polokwane

Saudi king pardons rape victim

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah has pardoned the victim of a gang-rape, whose sentencing to 200 lashes caused an international outcry, a Saudi newspaper said on Monday. The Justice Minister Abdullah bin Mohammad al-Sheikh said the king had the right to issue pardons if it was in the ”public interest”.

The African National Congress’s Polokwane conference may deal with nominations for the party’s presidency late on Monday, according to a senior party official. The nomination process is expected to result in a head-to-head clash for the top post between party president Thabo Mbeki and his deputy, Jacob Zuma.

Stocks slide as US rate-cut hopes fade

World stock markets slumped on Monday on worries that resurgent United States inflation would reduce the chances of further US interest rate cuts to shield the economy from a credit crunch, dealers said. European and Asian shares sank into the red with losses of up to 3,5% as investors took their cue from Wall Street’s sell-off on Friday.

Kenyan presidential race heats up

Kenya’s presidential race entered its final stretch on Monday, with the economy, corruption and tribalism looming large in ageing incumbent Mwai Kibaki’s bid to secure a second term. The last batch of opinion polls before the December 27 vote gave flamboyant opposition candidate Raila Odinga a slight edge on Kibaki.
