Some ANC national executive committee members believe that changes are needed in the procedure for the election of the party’s president, which should take place after an ”open campaign”. The idea is that anyone interested in leading the ANC would declare their interest and openly campaign for the position, writes Malusi Gigaba.

A ferry boat carrying more than 70 people capsized on Roodeplaat Dam, north of Pretoria, on Wednesday afternoon, Tshwane emergency services said. Spokesperson Johan Pieterse said one passenger suffered a serious leg laceration and was taken to hospital. However, there were conflicting reports on the number of injured.

Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang said on Wednesday that further investigation into the outbreak of klebsiella at a Durban hospital, where five babies died, was needed. In a statement, the minister said she had been briefed by the management of the Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital on the outbreak.

Saudi Arabia said on Wednesday it had arrested 208 people for involvement in several cells that planned an ”imminent attack” on an oil installation, and attacks on clerics and security forces. State television said one of the cells was planning to smuggle in missiles.

A British teacher detained in Sudan after her class called a teddy bear Muhammad was charged on Wednesday with insulting Islam in a move that sparked a diplomatic row. Gillian Gibbons (54) was also charged with inciting hatred and showing contempt for religious beliefs. If convicted, she could face 40 lashes, a fine or one year in jail.

African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma on Wednesday applied to the Constitutional Court for permission to challenge aspects of the investigation against him by the national director of public prosecution (NDPP). Zuma plans to challenge the issuing of a letter of request secured by the NDPP to get documents from Mauritius.

Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade said on Wednesday he would push to create a group of African leaders to resolve a stand-off between Zimbabwe and Britain, which has cast a shadow over a European Union-Africa summit. Wade arrived in Harare after British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he would boycott the planned December 8 to 9 Lisbon summit.
