Oil prices fell nearly 1% to below a barrel on Tuesday, fading from their latest record high as investors took profits from a rally driven by a Mexican supply failure and the spiralling dollar. United States crude fell by 71 cents to ,82 a barrel by 5.43am GMT after hitting a record high of ,80.

Skipper Graeme Smith said his team’s Test and one-day series wins in Pakistan could mark a huge step forward for South African cricket. African countries working jointly to construct an undersea telecoms cable should harmonise laws governing the sector if they are to land the much-awaited communications link, a senior United Nations official said on Monday. About 23 nations have long harboured a much-delayed plan to build the submarine cable to slash internet and calling costs.

At least 30 people were burnt to death when a fully laden road tanker overturned and caught fire on a busy highway, Nigerian police said on Monday. The truck was conveying fuel from the commercial capital, Lagos, to the northern part of Africa’s most populous nation when it crashed and spilled its contents in the south-western Ogun state late on Sunday.

Former spy boss Billy Masetlha said he found it amusing that the inspector general of intelligence kept asking for a report that had been sent to him several times, the Hatfield Community Court heard on Monday. Testifying under cross-examination, Masetlha said repeated requests from the inspector general for information ”took him aback”.
