Flooding leaves 3,5-million homeless in India

Soldiers in motor boats rescued thousands of marooned people and helicopters air-dropped food as the number of people left homeless after some of the worst flooding in years in India’s north-east rose to 3,5-million. About 10-million people out of the 27-million population of Assam state have been affected by flooding after rains in the past few days.

Ebola outbreak confirmed in DRC

An outbreak of Ebola haemorrhagic fever, a deadly disease for which there is no treatment, has been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the World Health Organisation said on Tuesday. Samples from five people have tested positive for the Ebola virus in the southern province of Kasai Occidental.

Mozambique boosts power supply to struggling Zim

Mozambique has doubled power supplies to its neighbour, Zimbabwe, which has been hit by massive power cuts, news reports said on Tuesday. The new deal came although Zimbabwe power company Zesa Holdings, which earlier this year declared itself broke, has an outstanding -million debt with Mozambican power supplier HCB, the official Herald newspaper said.

Top Gear presenter crashes again

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond escaped unhurt from a high-speed crash while filming the BBC show, less than a year after he nearly died in a jet-powered car, the BBC said on Tuesday. Hammond (37) was shunted off the track during an endurance race at the Silverstone track near Northampton at the weekend.

Burger cited for tackle in Samoa match

South Africa flanker Schalk Burger was cited on Tuesday for a high tackle on Samoa scrumhalf Junior Polu in his team’s World Cup Pool A 59-7 victory on Sunday. If Burger is suspended he will miss the Springboks’ pivotal group clash against defending champions England at the Stade de France on Friday evening.

Turkish police foil bomb attack in capital

Turkish police foiled a bomb attack in the capital, Ankara, on Tuesday, the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 al-Qaeda attacks on the United States. Ankara’s governor Kemal Onal said police had found a van packed with explosives near a multi-storey carpark in a central district of the city of four million.
