South Africa flanker Schalk Burger was cited on Tuesday for a high tackle on Samoa scrumhalf Junior Polu in his team’s World Cup Pool A 59-7 victory on Sunday. If Burger is suspended he will miss the Springboks’ pivotal group clash against defending champions England at the Stade de France on Friday evening.

Turkish police foiled a bomb attack in the capital, Ankara, on Tuesday, the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 al-Qaeda attacks on the United States. Ankara’s governor Kemal Onal said police had found a van packed with explosives near a multi-storey carpark in a central district of the city of four million.

The fraud case against Brett Kebble’s former security chief, Clinton Nassif, was again postponed for further investigation at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. National Prosecuting Authority advocate Andrea Kasiram requested that the case be postponed to November 19 and for Nassif’s R300 000 bail to be extended.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting capped another excellent year by picking up the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) cricketer of the year award for the second successive year on Monday. ”I am the first player to win this award twice in a row and it’s a great thrill for me and something I am very proud of,” said Ponting.

South African batsman Ashwell Prince has resigned as president of the South African Cricketers’ Association after alleged details of a meeting were published. Rapport claimed on Sunday that Prince was among 30 players who signed a memorandum calling for an end to South Africa’s racially influenced selection policies.

A Mitchells Plain court on Tuesday postponed a hearing for Cape Town mayor Helen Zille and 10 others who were arrested on Sunday during a protest against drug lords in a suburb of the city. Zille made a brief appearance in a magistrate’s court to face charges that she had participated in an illegal gathering.

A television reporter claims to have discovered China’s answer to the Loch Ness monster, state press reported on Sunday. Local journalist Zhuo Yongsheng shot footage of six "seal-like" creatures in the north-eastern Tianchi Lake, which local legend has long said is home to Loch Ness-style monsters.

A man awaiting trial on child-sex charges in the southern state of Arkansas in the United States tried to saw off his right leg in an apparent escape bid, police said on Monday. Days before he was due to appear in court on charges of rape and engaging children in sexually explicit conduct, Jerry Scholes sawed down to the bone of his right calf.

The Department of Home Affairs has suspended two of its senior officials, including a former acting director general. Chief financial officer Pat Nkambule and the deputy director general of civic services, Joel Chavalala — who once acted as director general — were suspended with immediate effect on Monday.
