Court postpones Zille case

A Mitchells Plain court on Tuesday postponed a hearing for Cape Town mayor Helen Zille and 10 others who were arrested on Sunday during a protest against drug lords in a suburb of the city. Zille made a brief appearance in a magistrate’s court to face charges that she had participated in an illegal gathering.

Senior home affairs officials suspended

The Department of Home Affairs has suspended two of its senior officials, including a former acting director general. Chief financial officer Pat Nkambule and the deputy director general of civic services, Joel Chavalala — who once acted as director general — were suspended with immediate effect on Monday.

Colombia captures cocaine king sought by FBI

One of the world’s most sought after cocaine kingpins was hunted down and captured in Colombia on Monday in the toughest blow against the country’s drugs trade in more than a decade. Diego Montoya, who goes by the alias ”Don Diego”, was the top boss of the Norte del Valle cartel, believed to be responsible for two-thirds of the cocaine exported from Colombia to Europe and the US.

Body Shop founder Anita Roddick dies

Anita Roddick, founder of beauty retailer the Body Shop and one of Britain’s best known businesswomen, has died at the age of 64 after suffering a major brain haemorrhage, her family said on Monday. The daughter of Italian immigrants, Roddick saw her business mushroom into an empire of more than 2 000 stores serving more than 77-million customers.

NUM says it may strike over safety

South Africa’s biggest mining union said on Monday it may strike to force mining companies to focus on the safety of workers, following a spate of recent deaths at mines. About 200 miners are killed in accidents at South African mines every year, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) general secretary Frans Baleni said.
