Dollar sets another record low against euro

The dollar fell to a new record low against the euro for a sixth successive session on Thursday, as investors braced for more economic reports that could reinforce expectations of another United States interest-rate cut in October. US economic data this week has provided no respite for the beleaguered dollar.

Mugabe slams ‘Almighty Bush’ over human rights

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe accused United States President George Bush of ”rank hypocrisy” on Wednesday for lecturing him on human rights, and likened the US Guantánamo Bay prison to a concentration camp. ”His hands drip with innocent blood of many nationalities,” Mugabe said in a typically fiery speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

Ferguson stunned by Coventry defeat

Manager Alex Ferguson was left ”shocked and flabbergasted” by his Manchester United side that lost 2-0 to Coventry City in the League Cup on Wednesday night. The Scot fielded a young team against the Championship (second division) side at Old Trafford, giving eight players their first starts of the season.

Good buying interest keeps JSE firm

Good buying interest was seen across the board on the JSE on Thursday and by midday the all-share index was up 224 points, with one trader speculating that it could close above the 30 000 level. A trader said the JSE was approaching its all-time high of 30 046,3, reached on Tuesday.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting warned Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s celebrating Indians on Thursday that the tourists are determined to start the one-day series on a winning note on Saturday. Ireland prop hospitalised

Ireland prop Simon Best was hospitalised on Wednesday night after feeling unwell and complaining of a loss of feeling down his right side, a team spokesperson said. The symptoms began on Wednesday on a day off for the team from its Rugby World Cup campaign, said team spokesperson Karl Richardson.

Cellphone recordings discussed at Motata trial

The state would try to admit cellphone audio and video recordings in the drunk-driving trial of Pretoria High Court judge Nkola Motata being heard in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. The recordings were made by Richard James Baird, into whose wall Motata allegedly crashed in Hurlingham, Johannesburg, on January 6.
