Dozens killed in bomb attack on army bus in Kabul

A bomb attack on a bus carrying Afghan army troops killed at least 27 people on Saturday in the capital, a witness said. Police at the scene initially said it was a suicide bomb attack, but one official said it could have been caused by a large land mine. Residents helped police pick up pieces of flesh and put them into plastic bags.

England prove too strong for Tonga

Champions England advanced to a quarterfinal meeting with Australia after proving too strong for Tonga in their Pool A decider on Friday by running in four tries in an eventually convincing 36-20 victory. Winger Paul Sackey added two more in the first half at a sodden Parc des Princes.

With the ANC’s elective conference in Polokwane two months away, ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma’s lieutenants in KwaZulu-Natal are ensuring that procedural "hiccups" in the nomination process at branch level will not hinder his final push towards the presidency. This emerged from a provincial executive committee meeting held recently.

Mbeki rushes to woo vets

A battle for the hearts and minds of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) veterans has started among ANC leaders as the vets meet this weekend at their national conference in Boksburg to reclaim their centrality in ANC politics. President Thabo Mbeki last week bestowed the Order of Mendi for Bravery on MK’s Luthuli Detachment, in a move read by his critics as a measure to appease the military veterans bemoaning their isolation from the ANC.

Eritrea warns UN of Ethiopian attack

Eritrea, in a letter published on Friday, urged the United Nations to force its arch-foe, Ethiopia, to urgently implement a border ruling, warning it feared Addis Ababa was preparing to resume war. In the letter, Foreign Minister Osman Saleh said he believed that Ethiopian threats to scrap the Algiers peace deal that ended their bloody 1998 to 2000 border war were a precursor to an attack.

Name mix-up leads to fatal kidney removal

A hospital error mixing up the X-rays of two similarly named patients led to the death of one of them after her perfectly healthy kidney was removed, the Italian press reported on Friday. The 54-year-old woman died of a likely embolism on Thursday, two days after undergoing the unnecessary operation, the reports said.
