Rains keep pouring down across Africa

Floods are continuing to ravage an arc of African countries from the Sahel to the Horn of Africa, washing away homes and ruining crops, and have been reported as the worst in years in many states. Uganda is experiencing its worst floods in memory, with about 89 000 households ”severely affected”.

Zimbabwe lashes British cleric

Zimbabwe’s information minister on Friday hit out at calls by the Archbishop of York to step up punitive measures against President Robert Mugabe’s government. Archbishop John Sentamu’s comments were misplaced and unfortunate, said Information Minister Sikhanyiso Ndlovu.

New search start-up hopes to rival Google

The dozens of entrepreneurs gathered for an exclusive high-tech conference in San Francisco this week all hoped to dazzle the crowd with their ingenuity. But one start-up, Powerset, is pursuing a particularly challenging goal: it is aiming to outshine the internet’s brightest star with a new search engine built to outsmart Google.
