Captain Ricky Ponting was absent from the Australia squad that headed to South Africa for the Twenty20 World Cup on Monday, with Cricket Australia (CA) citing ”family reasons” for his absence. CA chief executive James Sutherland said ”a private family issue” had arisen at the weekend for the 32-year-old skipper.

Benni McCarthy opened his Premier League scoring account for the new season as Blackburn took the wind out of Manchester City’s sails with a 1-0 win at Ewood Park on Sunday. The South African striker pounced after 13 minutes to claim what was to be the only goal of a match both sides ended with 10 men.

Sachin Tendulkar returned in style to the Headingley ground where he was Yorkshire’s first overseas player as he set up India’s 38-run win against England under the Duckworth/Lewis method in the fifth one-day international on Sunday. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon headed for Sudan on Monday to lay the groundwork for a solution to the festering Darfur conflict through talks and deployment of thousands of peacekeepers. Ban will seek commitment to his plan from Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and visit a refugee camp in the western Sudanese Darfur region.

Zimbabwe’s government has taken over United States food giant HJ Heinz’s 49% stake in the African nation’s leading cooking oil maker for ,8-million. The Swedish government said on Monday it would donate almost -million to preserve the works and memory of legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman who died in July. More than 9 000 unemployed youths will be trained as auxiliary social workers by 2010, the Department of Social Development said on Monday. Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya said the implementation of the training programme is part of an agreement of cooperation with Cuba.

The JSE continued on a lacklustre path as it edged up slightly from its flat open to trade 0,68% higher at midday on Monday. World markets were also flat at midday amid a continued lack of activity as United States traders took a day off to celebrate Labour Day. By midday on the JSE, the all-share index was up 0,68%.
