Benitez warns against complacency

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has urged his side not to be complacent when they face PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League quarterfinal at Anfield on Wednesday holding a 3-0 lead. Wednesday’s other quarterfinal is far more evenly balanced with Bayern Munich hosting AC Milan after the teams finished last week’s first leg 2-2 in Italy.

Bemba flies for treatment in Portugal

Opposition leader Jean-Pierre Bemba left the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Wednesday, ending three weeks holed up in South Africa’s embassy after his forces were routed in two days of fighting that killed 600 last month. A Reuters witness said Bemba boarded a private jet bound for Portugal, where he is due to have medical treatment.

Manchester United thrash AS Roma 7-1

Manchester United produced one of the finest performances in 50 years of European competition to destroy AS Roma 7-1 on Tuesday and reach the semifinals of the Champions League for the first time since 2002. It was the biggest victory in a quarterfinal match in either the European Cup or Champions League since Real Madrid beat Sevilla 8-0 in 1957/1958.

Yanks can’t be faulted

Don’t you just love the way the Americans mutilate the queen’s English, with "center", "harbor", "color", "favorite", "honor", "analyze", "memorize" and all the rest displacing the proper spelling? In the case of the Dodge Caliber’s name, though, the Yanks can’t be faulted, because the car is built in Belvedere, Illinois, so they can call it whatever they want.

Leadership letting us down

With the Castle Premiership all but wrapped up, the real battle in South African football at the moment is in the promotion play-offs in the Mvela Golden League. Looking at some of the clubs involved in the race to join the elite, one has to wonder whether there should be more stringent criteria imposed on who exactly can own football clubs in this country.

Extreme drought, ferocious bushfires and urban development are killing Australia’s koalas and could push the species towards extinction within a decade, environmentalists are warning. Alarms about the demise of the iconic and peculiar animal, which sleeps about 20 hours per day and eats only the leaves of the eucalyptus tree, have been raised before.

SA beat improved West Indies by 67 runs

South Africa restricted West Indies to 289 for nine wickets on Tuesday for a 67-run Super Eights victory that just about ended the tournament host’s chances of reaching the World Cup semifinals. AB de Villiers hit 146 and South Africa hammered 134 off the last 10 overs to set up a crushing victory at the brand new Grenada National Stadium.

Three suspected bombers killed in Casablanca

Three suspected suicide bombers blew themselves up on Tuesday following a police raid on a house in a Casablanca slum in which a fourth man was shot dead, police sources said. Police have been looking for up to 12 suspected suicide bombers since March 11 when the alleged leader of a suicide squad detonated his explosives belt in a cybercafé to stop police arresting him.
