DA wants the lowdown on Chippy Shaik

Failure to disclose information on investigations into allegations of bribery against Shamin ”Chippy” Shaik by the Public Protector reflects badly on the country’s reputation, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Sunday. Shaik was allegedly paid a -million bribe by one of the arms-deal bidding companies.

‘Travesty’ as alleged CD, DVD pirate is released

The release of a Chinese national after about R4-million in pirated CDs and DVDs were found at his Cyrildene home was a travesty, the South African Federation against Copyright Theft said on Sunday. Zhouren Chen’s case was removed from the roll by a senior prosecutor at the Johannesburg Specialised Crimes Court due to police deviations from procedure.

Roman Catholic bishops marked Easter Sunday with an unprecedented message to President Robert Mugabe to end oppression and leave office through democratic reform or face a mass revolt. ”The confrontation in our country has now reached a flashpoint,” they said in a pastoral message pinned up at churches throughout the country.

Australia cruise to win over England

Ricky Ponting hit 86 on Sunday to lead Australia to a seven-wicket win over England in the World Cup Super Eights and reaffirm his team’s status as overwhelming tournament favourites. England had won the toss and batted first, but collapsed from 230-5 to 247 all out despite Kevin Pietersen scoring 104.
