SA trade, credit data fuel rate worries

South Africa’s trade balance improved in February but remained in deficit, while credit growth surged and petrol prices are to jump, backing the case for the central bank to resume raising interest rates. South Africa’s current account gap has weighed heavily on the economy and currency over the past year, partly due to huge oil imports, robust consumer spending and a penchant for luxury imports.

Collingwood knock helps England past Irish

Paul Collingwood’s late flurry with the bat and four wickets from Andrew Flintoff gave England a 48-run win over rank outsiders Ireland in their World Cup Super Eights match on Friday. Collingwood smashed 90 including three sixes to help England add 65 runs in the last five overs and amass 266 for seven.

Artillery rocks Mogadishu on third day of fighting

Artillery fire rocked Mogadishu for a third day on Saturday as Ethiopian and Somali troops backed by helicopter gunships resumed a major offensive against Islamist insurgents and clan militiamen. Scores of civilians have been killed in what the International Committee of the Red Cross says is the capital’s worst fighting for more than 15 years.

Tsvangirai ‘deserved to be assaulted’, says Mugabe

A defiant Robert Mugabe openly acknowledged an assault on Zimbabwe’s opposition leader on Friday as he sought his ruling party’s nomination to stand once again in next year’s presidential election. The veteran president told supporters he had not received one word of criticism from his fellow Southern African leaders at a summit the day before.
