Question: I am 42 years old with my own business and a net income of R500 000. I require as much passive income as possible with tax benefits. I have numerous shares but have a problem following them regularily due to my business operations. I am certain I miss out on opportunities in the stock market.

The recent rise in the repo rate, the rate at which the Reserve Bank lends money to commercial banks, to 8% has raised the prime interest rate to 11,5%. This makes borrowing money to finance home and car purchases more expensive. But every dark cloud has a silver lining — and money market, fixed-deposit rates and savings for pensioners and other investors have seen a boom.

Jaycee Nxamakele, the former mayor of Matlosana in Klerksdorp who recently committed suicide after killing his wife and children, may have been targeted for a political purge by an ANC faction in North West nicknamed "the Talibans". Perceptions that factional plotting was responsible for the tragedy sparked pandemonium at Nxamakele’s funeral.
