On Wednesday, the <i>Mail & Guardian</i> filed a court challenge to Public Protector Lawrence Mushwana’s findings on the Oilgate scandal, seeking to have his report overturned and redone. Last July, Mushwana released the report that avoided probing parts of the scandal, but exonerated government and the parastatals involved.

This week, United States President George W Bush committed the US to the defence of Israel against threats from Iran, saying he would not allow the world to be "blackmailed" by an Iranian nuclear weapon. The president’s warning, issued in an exchange with students in Kansas, came at a tense time in relations with Iran.

The iThemba Lethu Milk Bank is the first in the world to provide breast milk exclusively for babies abandoned or orphaned by the virus. Qatari Energy Minister Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah joined a growing chorus of voices on Monday calling for the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) to leave production levels unchanged ahead of a meeting in Vienna on Tuesday. He said current high crude prices prevent any lowering of the cartel’s production level.

Lesotho’s foreign minister was shot and wounded in a weekend attack at his house, a media report said on Monday. It quoted police as saying Monyane Moleleki was attacked by several gunmen as he arrived at his home in the capital, Maseru, after midnight on Sunday.
