Telkom gets the hell out

Telkom has dropped a R5-million damages action against Gregg Stirton’s website hellkom.co.za, which he launched in response to the telecomms giant’s "incredibly high prices". The website features, amongst other things, the "Hellkom Vent", where users can publish their frustrations with the fixed-line operator.

PIC manages assets worth R488bn

Total assets under the management of the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) — formerly the Public Investment Commission — amounted to R488-billion at the end of June this year, says PIC CEO Brian Molefe. This was up from R461-billion at the end of the 2004/05 financial year.

‘Hippies of the forest’ face extinction

Bonobos, the great apes threatened with extinction which resolve disputes by having sex, have been given a sanctuary near Kinshasa where they wait to return to their home in the forests of the vast Democratic Republic of Congo. "Lola ya bonobos" is a 30ha forest run by the association Friends of the Bonobos, which over the last ten years has taken care of animals which have escaped being killed.

And, of course, ivory poachers. Park managers say they can’t deal effectively with these problems because of insufficient funding, staff and equipment.

‘Last pharaoh’ grabs 80% in Egypt poll

Hosni Mubarak swept more than 80% of the vote in an unprecedented pluralist presidential election hailed as an historic step but marred by violations, according to an early count published on Friday. The incumbent’s landslide victory left his nine rivals fighting over crumbs, with most estimates giving Ghad party leader Ayman Nur over Wafd chairperson Numan Gumaa.
