More dirt comes out the closet

Fresh allegations of financial misconduct against Evert Knoesen, the suspended director of the Lesbian and Gay Equality Project, surfaced this week, sparking further turmoil in the tight-knit world of gay politics. The project collapsed in April this year as a result of financial problems allegedly aggravated by Knoesen’s mismanagement.

Rasool over a barrel on Skwatsha

As a premier without party political authority, Ebrahim Rasool faces a difficult task when it comes to replacing Western Cape minister of transport Mcebisi Skwatsha.
Last week, the provincial African National Congress started discussing the issue and Rasool, who lost the position of party chairperson in June, may find his hands tied over having a replacement of his choice.

‘Vive le Tour. Forever’

American Lance Armstrong waved goodbye to what has been a remarkable cycling career after securing his seventh consecutive yellow jersey following the 21st and final stage of the Tour de France on Sunday. The 33-year-old finished the race with a 4min 40sec lead on Italian Ivan Basso with Germany’s Jan Ullrich, the 1997 winner, finishing third on the podium at 6:21.

Sweet revenge of Bucs

It was sweet and emphatic revenge for Orlando Pirates as they beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the Vodacom Challenge Final at Absa Stadium on Sunday and dominated the team who had edged in front of them at the last hurdle in last season’s Premier League title race.

Baghdad truck bomb kills 40

A suicide truck bomber struck on Sunday outside a police station in Baghdad, killing at least 40 people, the United States military said. Television pictures showed a deep crater in the road outside the Rashad police station in the New Baghdad neighbourhood in the east of the capital, as ambulances and fire fighters attended the scene.

Egypt holds 70 after Red Sea bombings

Egyptian police have detained scores of suspects following the terrorist attack at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik that killed almost 90 people. At least 70 people have been arrested in the roundup, which appeared similar to police operations after last October’s incidents at the Sinai resorts of Taba and Ras Shitan, when 3 000 people were detained.
