This is according to the latest KreditInform barometer, based on a survey of more than 100 major corporations, with the majority from the manufacturing, wholesale and retail, mining and agricultural sectors.

Minister of Arts and Culture Pallo Jordan has dissolved the board of the National Arts Council (NAC) with effect from December 14, he announced on Monday. He said the NAC as presently constituted has lost the confidence of the arts community and is not in a position to carry out the responsibilities assigned to it.

Three men scaled the wall outside Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s house in Orlando West in Soweto shortly after midnight on Saturday and, threatening to kill the security guard who caught them, demanded to see her, said police. Madikizela-Mandela, the ex-wife of former president Nelson Mandela, was sleeping in the house at the time.

The Democratic Alliance has released its ”report card” assessing the performance of Cabinet ministers since they assumed office after the April elections, saying the overall record has been passable but lacklustre. The best performer was Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, who scored 8/10, while the worst performer was Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who scored 1/10, said DA leader Tony Leon.

Citizens who received social grants to which they are not entitled have until the end of March to apply for indemnity. Those who fail to do so will face ”drastic measures”, Minister of Social Development Zola Skweyiya said in Pretoria on Monday. He said about 37Â 000 people are apparently illegally enjoying benefits.

Opposition leaders on Monday slammed King Mswati III for spending millions of lilangeni on a luxury car at a time of food shortages in his impoverished Southern African country. Africa’s last absolute monarch spent more than four million lilangeni (about R3,96-million) on a state-of-the-art DaimlerChrysler Maybach 62 last week.

The Kora All-Africa music awards ceremony on Sunday night named the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Werra Son and South Africa’s Thandiswa Mazwai as best male and female artists on the continent. The best African group award was given to JJC and 419 Squad of Nigeria for their track Kilonshele, organisers said on Monday.

Former rebels have blocked Congolese troops from reinforcing positions near its volatile border with Rwanda, after clashes between the two sides on Sunday, the region’s military chief said on Monday. Colonel Etienne Bindu, military chief of the North Kivu province, said the two sides are, ”are watching each other like cat and dog” in the town of Kanyabayonga, the scene of the fighting, he said.
