New power generation capacity project for SA

The Department of Minerals and Energy said on Monday it had embarked on a process to introduce new power generation capacity to meet the country’s growing demand for electricity. According to the national integrated resource plan recently published by the national electricity regulator, there is a need for over 2 500 megawatts (MW) of new peaking capacity between 2006 and 2010.

Zimbabwe needs a ‘regime change’

Zimbabwe’s main opposition leader took his campaign against President Robert Mugabe to Britain on Sunday, rallying expatriates and declaring their destitute southern African country ready for ”regime change”. ”We want regime change in Zimbabwe. But we want regime change by through the ballot, not the bullet,” said Morgan Tsvangirai, the head of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

‘No lasting peace’ as long as Gbagbo is around

South African President Thabo Mbeki held a second day of talks on Sunday with Côte d’Ivoire rebel leader Guillaume Soro and Prime Minister Seydou Diarra to broker peace in the war-wracked West African nation. Rebel leader Soro hailed Mbeki’s insight into the Ivorian crisis but said no lasting solution could be found as long as President Laurent Gbagbo remained in power.

Nations band together to protect sharks

More than 60 countries agreed to ban the killing of sharks for their fins in the Atlantic Ocean, a move that conservationists hope will increase protection of threatened species around the world. The agreement bans the practice known as shark finning in which fishermen slice off a shark’s fin and throw the carcass overboard, leaving room for more fins.

DA fights its former ally in Durban

Delegates to South Africa’s official opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) federal congress in Durban over the weekend were greeted by a flood of posters on just about every lamp post in the area surrounding the International Convention Centre, advertising the candidacy of an Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) candidate and a DA candidate for the local municipal ward.

Tributes have poured in for the National Council of Provinces chairperson Joyce Kgoali, who died in Johannesburg on Sunday. The African National Congress Women’s League called their late executive committee and working committee member ”unassuming and forthright” with an ”unshakeable” commitment to the
organisation’s policies.

Reggae stars ‘fuel spread of HIV’

Dancehall reggae musicians are fuelling the spread of HIV/Aids in the Caribbean and the United Kingdom by their homophobic lyrics, a British government minister will say on Monday. In June, the Jamaican gay rights leader Brian Williamson was stabbed to death. Crowds gathered outside his home, singing in the street to celebrate his murder.

Bush plays action hero in security row

He may not be his party’s most famous action hero, but United States President George Bush bolstered his tough-guy credentials on Saturday night when he waded into a melee in Santiago to rescue one of his secret service bodyguards. Bush reached into the crowd and yanked out the bodyguard, then walked away, straightening his cuffs and looking none too pleased.
