An experimental X-43 pilotless plane on Saturday broke the world speed record for an atmospheric engine, briefly flying at 7 700kph — seven times the speed of sound, Nasa said. The hypersonic aircraft, a cross between a jet and a rocket, was dropped from the wing of a modified B-52 bomber.
A child died in a collapsed house and seven fishermen were missing and feared dead early on Sunday as a large spiralling storm lashed the coast of southern Brazil, civil defence officials said. Meanwhile, meteorologists disagreed over whether the storm was a hurricane — the first on record in the South Atlantic.
A strong earthquake shook eastern Turkey on Sunday, days after another quake killed 10 people in the region. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in Sunday’s quake. The quake, centred in Erzurum province, had a preliminary magnitude of 5,3, the Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory said.
The Zimbabwean government has nearly quadrupled President Robert Mugabe’s official salary and backdated the increase to January 1, the state Herald newspaper reported on Saturday. Mugabe’s general allowances for housing and living expenses were doubled, according to a government notice issued in the Herald.
The Department of Labour has set aside nearly R450-million from the National Skills Fund to be channelled towards skills grants for employers participating in the recruitment of young unemployed learners, Minister of Labour Membathisi Mdladlana said on Saturday.
