The CEO of South Africa’s 2010 World Cup bid, Danny Jordaan, returned from his one-month trip abroad to inform and assure South Africans that the bid was still on track despite the shenanigans in the South African Football Association. Jordaan said: “As I speak to you now I have no doubt that our case is still strong.”

With a new Springbok coach, a restructured Currie Cup and more, there is a touch of keen anticipation to the beginning of the new rugby season this week, for the 2004 Super 12 is the last competition prior to the reinvention of South African rugby. It could also be the last Super 12, but that’s another story.

The Amaglug-glug — the South African under-23 soccer team — are in a dismal position. Recently the Zambian under-23 team defeated the South Africans 1-0, once again almost dashing the youngsters’ dreams of Athens. All’s not lost though. On Saturday the Amaglug-glug meet Zambia again and a win will put them back on track to qualify.

South Africa came from the jaws of defeat to book a place in the Super League of the International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup tournament in Bangladesh on Friday. The South Africans had to dig deep to overcome a determined England team. The South African side bowled England out for 189.

New National Party leaders and delegates from across the country turned out in force at the NNP’s national election manifesto launch in Stellenbosch on Friday. New Zealand survived a desperate last-over lashing from an injured Shaun Pollock to secure a dramatic five-run win over South Africa in a one-day cricket international on Friday. Needing 26 to win off the last five balls, Pollock clouted three mighty sixes and a two but his heroic effort was stifled by a last-ball yorker from Kyle Mills.

While the figures for drought and famine in Southern Africa are less apocalyptic than they were a year ago, the scale of human misery is unacceptably high and an appeal to the international community for special help looks inevitable. The continuing drought and the HIV/Aids epidemic are expected to keep Southern Africa in need of aid for years to come.
