Mayo to milk Stars

Kaizer Chiefs have made the Coca-Cola Cup their own playground, appearing in all three finals since the competition was reintroduced. With a victory in the first final and a loss last year to Jomo Cosmos, they now face Premier Soccer League rookies Silver Stars on Saturday.

Oberholzer’s departure ‘regrettable’

Sport and Recreation Minister Ngconde Balfour lamented Rian Oberholzer’s departure from South African rugby on Friday, but at the same time said it was ”understandable”. ”I understand the circumstances that resulted in Rian Oberholzer and Rudolf Straeuli vacating their positions,” the minister said.

Selling the drama

You’ve got to take your hat off to Milan; the only city to have produced two European Cup winners, both of whom are now in the semifinals of the champions’ league, who played each other in the mother of all derbies on Wednesday at the San Siro, the same stadium where they will play the return leg this week. Manchester and Liverpool might fancy themselves two great football cities but, in terms of raw credentials, they cannot compete with Milan.

Ederle proved women could succeed

Female athletes were still mostly ignored when Gertrude Ederle, who has died aged 98, made her historic swim across the English Channel from France on August 6 1926. She became the first woman to make the crossing but also beat the previous record – held by a man – by about two hours.
