It is a tale of two weddings and a billionaire. In one of India’s poorest states, Uttar Pradesh, a six-day celebration estimated to cost more than £50-million (about R626-million), started this week for the nuptials of two sons of one of India’s wealthiest men. The venue is a huge site dominated by a floodlit lake and complete with a London orchestra and a replica of the White House.

North Africa rivals Tunisia and Morocco will meet in the African Cup of Nations final on Saturday after coming through their semifinals in vastly contrasting fashions on Wednesday. Tunisia came from a goal down to force extra-time against Nigeria before triumphing in a penalty shoot-out at the Rades Stadium while Morocco, champions in 1976, cruised past Mali 4-0 in Sousse.

One of the most eagerly awaited FA Cup matches of recent times will take place at Old Trafford on Saturday when Manchester United host bitter local rivals Manchester City in the fifth round. The tie was only confirmed last week when Kevin Keegan’s City beat Tottenham 4-3 in a fourth-round replay.

Venda-based Black Leopards beat relegation candidates Hellenic 2-1 in a Premier Soccer League match played at the Pam Brink Stadium on Wednesday night. Leopards striker Duncan Lechesa opened the visitors’ account with a header in the 54th minute from a well-taken corner kick by substitute Kelvin Mushangahike.

Orlando Pirates’ good form continued at Johannesburg Stadium on Wednesday where they scored a comfortable 2-0 win over top-of-the-log Santos in a Castle Premiership fixture marred by wet conditions. Pirates held the initiative throughout the 90 minutes from a Santos side that lacked urgency.

The treason trial of Zimbabwe’s opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, accused of plotting to assassinate President Robert Mugabe, reopened on Wednesday with an aide to Tsvangirai saying they had been taken for a ride by a Canadian political consultancy firm.
