One of the greatest stalwarts of the African film industry, Lionel Ngakane, died on Wednesday morning in Rustenburg after a long illness. Ngakane (75) was instrumental in paving the way for the recognition of African cinema internationally and received several accolades for his work in the film industry.

The South African government is talking to Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe’s regime on the protection of South African interests in that country, in the context of a bilateral agreement between the two states. A passenger boat capsized on Lake Mweru on Zambia’s northern border with Congo, killing 26 people and leaving 14 missing, officials said on Wednesday. The boat was sailing in rough weather on Monday afternoon when the accident happened, police spokesperson Brenda Muntemba said.

Eight out of 10 children who have lost parents to HIV/Aids live in sub-Saharan Africa, a study by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) revealed on Wednesday. ”If not for HIV/Aids, the number of orphans in the region would be decreasing,” said Unicef director Carol Bellamy.

Peacekeeping missions could not succeed unless they involved the destruction of weaponry used in conflicts, Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota said on Wednesday. ”It is important to collect the weapons that you disarm, many of whom have killed people already. (They) simply have to be destroyed,” he said in Pretoria.

Zimbabwean authorities have been urged to drop charges against 14 people who were arrested for circulating an e-mail message criticising President Robert Mugabe’s economic policies and calling for his departure. This is the first time the country’s authorities have used a law passed last year allowing them to intercept e-mail.
