One man and a child survived among 40 passengers aboard an Iranian aircraft that crashed and burst into flames on Tuesday on landing in the emirate of Sharjah, state television reported. Several dead bodies were shown in dramatic footage of the burning wreck.

An apparent car bomb exploded on Tuesday at a police station south of Baghdad, the United States military said. Colonel William Darley, a military spokesperson, said the blast occurred in the town of Iskandariyah, about 50km south of the Iraqi capital. He had no further details.

An inquiry into racism in South African rugby will be set up by the end of February, Minister of Sport Ngconde Balfour said on Tuesday. ”Rugby has had its own internal inquiry. The bigger inquiry must be taken up by the minister, which will look at transformation in the sport and whether there is racism,” he said.

The Zimbabwean opposition on Monday refuted remarks by South African President Thabo Mbeki that it has agreed to early elections in Zimbabwe. The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) also rebutted Mbeki’s insistence in a TV broadcast that a timetable for formal talks with the ruling Zanu-PF party has been worked out.

When former Liberian president Charles Taylor took up Nigeria’s offer of exile last year, he left behind a country where the flow of information had slowed to a trickle — particularly in rural areas. Taylor had withdrawn the frequencies of private radio stations and had subsequently banned them.

A 24-year-old woman buried alive for nearly a week was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed Turkish housing block on Monday, the second ”miracle survivor” from a tragedy in which at least 87 died. ”She said ‘get me out and I will have you over for tea’,” a rescuer said, adding that he was unable to hold back his tears.

A Thai health official warned on Monday that authorities must prepare for an expected second onslaught of bird flu, as Vietnam reported the region’s 19th fatality from the virus that has ravaged poultry farms across Asia. The World Health Organisation, meanwhile, said China may already have human cases of bird flu.

The government gave out 270-million male condoms last year, which is an 80% increase from 1997 when 150-million were distributed, the Department of Health said on Monday. The department announced the figures at the launch of its Sexually Transmitted Infections/Condom Week, which runs from February 9 to 14.
