Time for heroes

As Bafana Bafana prepare to meet old foes Nigeria in the African Cup of Nations, they are in need of new heroes. Whichever team wins on Saturday is likely to qualify from the group, the others will probably be booking early flights home. But Siyabonga Nomvete cannot be allowed to carry the team alone.

Rebels urge Liberian leader to quit

Liberia’s two rebel movements have jolted the country’s fragile peace process by demanding the resignation of the head of the transitional government, Gyude Bryant. ”The Lurd and Model are vehemently and unconditionally calling for the immediate, uncompromising and peaceful removal and subsequent replacement of Gyude Bryant … the commencement of disarmament,” a statement said.

‘It’s a real nightmare’

A suicide bomber blew himself up on a bus in Jerusalem on Thursday, killing at least 10 bystanders and wounding about 30 in an attack outside Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s official residence, police and paramedics said. Sharon was not in the area. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Brazil got themselves knocked out of the 2004 Olympics football tournament at the weekend, beaten 1-0 in Chile by a Paraguay team who will go on to join Argentina as South America’s representatives in the finals in Greece this year. There are many voices saying it would all be different if Kakà had been there.

South Africa’s men’s hockey team failed to turn heaps of possession into goals on their way to a 0-0 draw against the lower-ranked Canadians in Potchefstroom on Friday morning. After enduring a scrappy opening half South Africa upped the tempo, especially in the final quarter.
